How it all began
WMS, a manufacturer of video lottery terminals, slot machines and software, helps casinos to manage their own gaming operations. The gaming products manufacturing company has also diversified its operations to offer online as well as mobile games. WMS is a subsidiary of WMS Industries. The history of WMS industries can be traced back to 1943 when Harry Williams founded the Williams Manufacturing Company.
The Stanford University-trained engineer devised a “tilt” mechanism for pinball machines, changing the nature of America’s pinball industry. The games created by Williams Manufacturing Company were transferred to the company’s video games subsidiary Midway Games. Subsequently, Midway Games went public and was spun away. In the 1980s, WMS entered the home video market arcade with hit arcades such as NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat. In the early 1990s, the company diversified its operations into casino gaming through WMS Gaming, a wholly owned subsidiary. They started producing video poker machines and later on entered the slot machine market.
WMS brought out their first hit in 1996 when they introduced the casino slot machine Reel em In. The innovative product shunned the traditional machine which had only limited themes. Reel em In was a multi-coin, multi-line secondary bonus casino video slot machine. WMS followed this up successful games such as Jackpot Party, Filthy Rich and Boom. In 1999, the company was incorporated as WMS Gaming and at the dawn of the millennium the company sold off their pinball line as the arcade industry started declining.
By 2001, WMS was licensing and leasing their Monopoly-themed participation slots to casinos, rather than selling the games. Subsequently, the gaming company introduced participation game machines based on entertainment-related brands such as Men in Black, The Wizard of Oz, Hollywood Squares, Star Trek, Clue and The Lord of the Rings. Further, they networked some of the games within casinos as well as between casinos to offer a chance for winning large jackpots to players on the basis of the number of machines.
WMS Industries formed Williams Interactive in 2012, a wholly-owned subsidiary, to focus on development and growth of the company’s online wagering, casual, social and mobile gaming operations. In the same year, Williams Interactive launched Jackpot Party Casino, a social casino game, on Facebook and entered into multi-year agreements with online casinos Unibet and Betsson so that they could offer premium video slot games Zeus, Jackpot Party, Reel Em In to over 12 million of their registered customers. In the following year, Scientific Games acquired WMS.
Summary
Summarizing, WMS Gaming works hard to make all generations of casino gamers happy. They continue to produce slot games having fewer features to cater to the older casino gamers and slots with skill-based elements to satisfy the needs of younger players who crave for challenging games.
