CyanogenMod offer ‘Call Recording’ feature on nightlies

by

CyanogenMod (CM) seem to have added a ‘Call recording’ feature to its nightlies list although this is not being offered as a direct feature for legal reasons.

For those of you unfamiliar with the CM download process it’s quite simple to understand. Generally speaking CM offers stable and nightly ROM versions. The ‘stable’ as it sounds is considered a reliable and generally predicable install with minimal bugs and a smoother experience. On the other side ‘nightlies’ are highly experimental and are updated far more frequently than stables (usually on a nightly basis hence the name). As such most users are encouraged to wait and install stable versions for the best experience.

However one benefit of nightlies is those who venture for the more adventurous version are often provided with features which are highly experimental, offered new features first and often features which will don’t make it into the stable ROM’s.

Over the last few days we have seen increased activity on the nightly changelogs which suggest CM have incorporated a call recording feature into its most recent nightlies. Generally speaking call recording is largely considered very grey in terms of the law and as such it seems CM is not offering this feature as a direct and obvious feature. Instead what we are seeing is the call recording setting can be activated by the user but does require a little bit of knowledge. This presumably is a way for CM to avoid any direct law breaking. So to be accurate CM are now offering support for call recording although not the feature directly.

As we speak the forums are constantly updating with the instructions and basic system coding to activate the already in place feature. This seems to be mainly a legal issue for the US, EU and Australia and as such the forums seem to be highly focusing on these regions.

If you wish to read more or unlock the feature (I mean support) then head over to the CM code review forums where all the details are listed.
